NOVEMBER 30

HOMEROOM: We did spelling; had a class meeting; read from our Christmas novel.

READING: Maniac Magee: Classwork: Personification. Homework: Figurative Language focus: Look for examples of similes, metaphors, and personifications from pages 14-30.

Tangerine: Continue to gather information on the relationship you chose in your reading groups today. Remember to include the emotional response to those involved. Also, include two new vocabulary words.

Number the Stars: Friendship recipe mini-project. The gathering of ideas are due Wednesday. Be thinking how you would like to pull the ideas together . . . in a paragraph, poem or poster.

NOVEMBER 29

HOMEROOM: PE class. Also, I started to read a short Christmas Novel to the students.

READING: Maniac Magee: Look for examples of similes, metaphors and personifications and record these on your paper. Look on pages 1-13.

Tangerine: Read up to the agreed amount we stated in class. Rotation 1 - page 100; Rotation 2 - page 60.   With post-its begin to color code and mark four focuses as you read: 1. What realities mom does not see; 2. Relationships between whom and descriptions; 3. Fears the boys have; 4. What rules or defiant behaviors does Eric enact.

Also, complete the vocabulary sheet, handed out during our meeting.

Number the Stars: Complete the work we started in our meeting. Excellent job today!

NOVEMBER 22

HOMEROOM: No specialists today due to conference week schedule.

SPELLING: Apple side and some students will do parts or all of the other side of the homework. Due Tuesday.


Reading Homework: Read to chapter 11 (page 38) in the class novel, Maniac Magee, and respond to the following:
1. List any new characters.
2. Good or Bad and such evidence
3. Setting: Where and When
4. Make one prediction
5. Define one conflict: human vs human; human vs self; human vs society; human vs environment
6. In one sentence, state the problem.
7. List 2 vocabulary words and their definitions.

If you are reading Number of Stars - draw a map of Denmark. Include the following:

Capital of Denmark
The border of Germany and Denmark
Name the waterways around Denmark

Tangerine

Read the first 30 pages and fill in the flow chart regarding what parents can not see or won’t see. And answer the questions on the blog.

SPELLING: Studied word parts, in particular, how to add suffixes to root words.

HOMEWORK: Practice adding suffixes: Complete "Dear Parents" sheet. Due tomorrow.

NOVEMBER 17

HOMEROOM: We had Library this morning. I can not believe the fact that some students have yet to check out a book from the library! Wow!

READING: We discussed the check-out system for books from Ms. Rhein's library. Classwork: Students completed a culminating activity to demonstrate their understanding and usage of text features in nonfiction reading material.

Homework: Read the next 10 pages in their class novel and respond to the following:
1. List any new characters.
2. Good or Bad and such evidence

NOVEMBER 15

HOMEROOM: We had PE first thing this morning.

SPELLING: Finished spelling test, skill test and proofreading

READING: Today we examined different organizational designs of non-fiction readings according to the purpose of the particular read. In addition, we explored how reading rates change according to the purpose for reading a passage. With the second timing of the same reading passages students realized the difference between skimming over an article versus the scanning of the reading material.

As we leave the reading of non-fiction to reading fiction works, we discussed four different types of conflicts. Homework: Complete 2 examples of each type of conflict as discussed in class today. Due Wednesday.

NOVEMBER 8

HOMEROOM:

SPELLING: Discussed prefixes: ex, post, auto, post

READING/SCIENCE: Completed a quiz on environmental factors and their influences. Homework: reread pages 23 - 26. Create a t-chart listing the organizational differences for fiction and non-fiction and main ideas for the factitious  and nonfiction ideas in the one article.

Reminder to those who had corrections to make in their flip books, please turn those in tomorrow.

NOVEMBER 4

HOMEROOM: We have a half day of school tomorrow. Even though we will not have rotations, homework is still expected to be turned in Friday morning.

SPELLING: Practiced with prefix concepts and a variety of prefixes. Students had 20 minutes to complete their assignment. Most finished.

SCIENCE/READING: Rotation 1: Complete flipbook/vocabulary - due at end of the period today. 2. Read and organize information on Beetles using the Power Box sheets provided. Due tomorrow.
Rotation 2 and 3: Write a paragraph on the beetle of their choice using the organized information they completed the day before. An introduction nor a conclusion is necessary for these paragraphs. Read and take notes (using the power boxes to organize their learning) on Isopods page 22 in their science books.

NOVEMBER 3

HOMEROOM:

SPELLING: Corrected and review prefixes.

READING: SRI testing

SCIENCE/READING: Rotation 2 and 3: Reading page 20 and organize material on Beetles.
Rotation 1: complete vocabulary - flip book.

HOMEROOM: All sixth graders took the Cogat test today. No rotations. However, Mr. Pfiffner did assign a math assignment. It was it their mail boxes. I hope students remembered to empty their mail boxes!

SPELLING: Complete Dear Parent and the "apple" side. Due tomorrow.
